Most people know about Standard Poodles because of their funny hair cuts. These elaborate does make standard poodles look frou frou and you may be wondering - what are these dogs really like anyway?
While it is true that the standard poodle hair cuts can be quite elaborate, you can also groom a poodle too look like a teddy bear - no really! Look!
All three of the puppies above are/were part of our "started puppies" program, and our family had all of them groomed with a "teddy bear" clip. This type of hair cut keeps the hair on their nose long and gives them a very friendly, huggable, appearance!
And while friendly, and huggable aren't normally the words people associate with standard poodles, I would say they are great words to describe this wonderful breed.
Standard poodles LOVE their families, and in some cases they get particularly attached to one member of the family. Our Standard Poodle, Oreo, LOVES to be my shadow. He waits for me in the hall outside the bathroom, lays down under my feet when I'm cooking dinner, and rests his head on my lap when I'm working on my computer.
People often wonder if Standard Poodles are a smart as people say they are - and they are.
:-D But I feel like what sets them apart is that more than smart, they're perceptive. They learn things I never ask them to learn. They pick up on my requests, without me ever having to make them.
Eye contact - this might not be on the top of your list when looking for a new pet, but I have to say that the way standard poodles make eye contact is something very special! It's like they look right into you and really see, or try to see, you. And it's very very sweet.
This breed is great with kids. All of my poodles do so well with my kids (who range in age from 3-12 years old). Kids love how soft standard poodles are. And they love to play with them, snuggle with them, and the little ones might occasionally try to ride on their back. :-)
Athletic? Good hunter? Water dog? These are a few of the traits that aren't often associated with poodles, but they are very much poodle! Poodle in German means puddle!
